A simple technique to calm the mind.

It was once asked by some one that what is the way to divert my mind, it generally becomes very difficult for people to divert their minds from some thing and that no matter how much ever you try to divert it your mind is not diverted from that thing.

Many people will give you advice but generally does not work. If I am angry with some one the 1st thing any one tells me is that do not be angry, but the more people tell  me not to be angry the more angry I become, so any advice or restriction put on you will act as a restriction on you, also using techniques of the mind to calm down your mind will not work. As your mind is already agitated and you are in no position to think. So I will be introducing a small trick that you can use in Yoga to calm your mind. Many Yogis also recommend this.

According to the Yogis if you cannot control your mind try controlling your breath, the control of the breath will automatically control the mind. This technique can be used even for concentration, if you want to achieve single pointed concentration this technique will be very useful.

Following is the technique

On your right hand join your middle finger  and your ring finger and then close your right nostril with your thumb. Breath in with your left nostril for 1 count, you may use any mantra as the count. Now hold your breath for atleast 4 counts, in this case also you may repeat your mantra. Once this is done you may release the thumb from your right nostril and then join your middle and ring finger and close your left nostril and then breath out for 2 counts or repeat the mantra twice.

Now please note that this can be done in the ratio of 1:4:2, that means you may breath in from the left nostril for 4 counts, hold your breath for 16 counts and then leave your breath for 8 counts from the right nostril.

So how many counts you take completely depends upon your capacity, I would advice that please do not go beyond your capacity. Since you will make sure that this technique done properly, you will be concentrated and automatically you will become calm.

Also note that while doing this you will be totally involved and will not like any disturbance.

I really hope this technique helps people.
